On February 5th 2020, a Pegasus Airline aircraft broke into three pieces during a rough landing at Istanbul Sabiha airport. As a result, three people were killed, whilst 179 of the 183 passengers and crew were treated for injuries related to the crash.
The plane was arriving from the city of Izmir on Turkey’s Aegean Coast under flight number PC2193 when it skidded and crashed into a road. The Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen airport closed at the time of the incident causing dozens of delays and cancellations, however, re-opened on 6th February 2020.
Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen airport released a statement on their website saying: “All passengers can receive information from the relevant airlines about any changes or cancellations to their flights.”
The airline also offers connecting flights to a large variety of destinations available from Stansted via Istanbul. Passengers who have booked connecting flights with the airline are encouraged to directly contact their airline company to see if their flights have been affected.
What happens if my flight has been delayed?
If your flight has been delayed and you arrive at your destination more than three hours later than planned, you can claim compensation from your airline, provided you have checked in for your flight on time.
If you are not eligible for compensation, you will still be entitled to care and assistance, this will usually include the cost of food, drink, phone calls and accommodation where necessary. If your flight is delayed for more than 6-12 hours, you may also be able to claim a small benefit from your travel insurance – check your policy wording for more details.
What happens if my flight has been cancelled?
If your flight has been cancelled, your airline should either; offer to rebook you on an alternative flight on a date of your choosing, or offer you a refund on all unused parts of your ticket.
