In an attempt to curb the over-consumption of alcohol in some Spanish tourist hotspots, the Balearic Island Government has introduced tougher alcohol restrictions for holidaymakers. The new rule, which sees a ban on late night alcohol consumption in public pathways and roads, came into play on Saturday 11th May 2024 and will affect holidaymakers heading to Llucmajor, Palma and Magaluf and San Antonio, Ibiza.
Those who are caught drinking alcohol outside of an authorised area will face a fine of between €500 and €1,500. The consumption of alcohol in bars, terraces and legally enabled zones is still allowed.
In addition, party boats, a popular excursion for many holidaymakers, are now banned from sailing within one nautical mile of the above destinations and will not be allowed to pick up or drop off passengers in these areas.
A ban on the sale of alcohol between 9.30pm and 8am will also continue in these areas. This rule, however, does not apply to restaurants, bars or clubs.
The Balearic Island Government is hoping tougher restrictions will help put a stop to anti-social behaviour from holidaymakers.
Holidaymakers should also be aware of the implications alcohol-consumption may have on their travel insurance policy. In general, alcohol related claims will not be covered by travel insurance, this includes claims for personal possessions, injury and illness. Most travel insurers will have their restrictions outlined in their policy wording so holidaymakers should be sure to check this before travelling.
