Choosing a holiday destination in the UK can often be the hardest part of planning a break. And with so many places to choose from, it can feel overwhelming knowing where to begin!
That’s why we’ve made things a little easier and have put together a list of some of the best British holiday hotspots for 2022.
What’s more, all the below destinations are popular holiday choices among Brits and so have a variety of accommodation choices available. So, whether you’re after a luxury hotel, a stop-over bed & breakfast, or simply somewhere to rest your head at the end of the day, there’s something to suit all budgets in all of these locations.
Cornwall
Whether you’re after a bucket and spade holiday not too far from home, a romantic getaway, or the chance to explore a different part of the UK, Cornwall has something for everyone.
Located in the South West of England, Cornwall boasts 400-mile coastlines perfect for swimming, surfing, or sailing (or even sitting back and watching the day go by). With an abundance of rich heritage, there’s also tonnes for travellers who like to get out and about to explore. From historic museums and maritime legacy to popular tourists’ hot spots including Pendennis Castle and St Michaels Mount, it is the perfect place for sightseeing.
Of course, a trip to Cornwall wouldn’t be complete without divulging in some of the traditional Cornish food. Cornish pasties and Cornish cream teams are a staple that must be enjoyed while on a trip to the South West coast. Plus, for those who enjoy a tipple or two, Cornwall is renowned for its traditional Cornish beverages. These include craft beers, homemade ales, and a selection of different flavoured gins – remember all alcohol is to be consumed within moderation!
Cornwall is also known for its range of festivals hosted throughout the year. Over the summer months, you can expect food, art, music, and even boat festivals. With something for everyone, it is the perfect family holiday destination.
Edinburgh
Holidays in the UK don’t always have to involve laying on a beach and eating ice cream, as many Brits prefer a picturesque UK trip. So, it’s no surprise that Scotland’s breath-taking capital is a popular choice for many.
Edinburgh offers a variety of history, culture, sightseeing, and amazing cuisine. So, if you find yourself taking a break in Scotland, why not wander to the Old Town where you can find the Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile? Or pop to the New Town and enjoy an afternoon of shopping and eating in some of Edinburgh’s best restaurants? For those who are a little more adventurous, why not climb to the top of Arthur’s Seat and take in the amazing views of the city while you’re there? You won’t want to forget your camera for this one!
With so many museums, art galleries, and theatre performances available to tourists, you won’t be short of things to do while you’re in the area. Plus, if you’re into performing arts, then why not time your visit for August and prepare to be amazed by the Edinburgh Fringe Festival? With some of the best performers in the world attending the festival, you won’t be left disappointed.
There really is something for everyone in Edinburgh – but if you are planning a break in the winter months we’d recommend wrapping up as it can get very cold!
Lake District
If you enjoy long, picturesque, country walks and bike rides that last for miles without seeing anyone in sight, then the Lake District is the place for you. With over 3,100 kilometres of right of way paths, it is the perfect destination to breathe in the crisp open air and take in the beautiful views. And if you have a dog (and your accommodation welcomes animals), then your pet might just enjoy this holiday too!
But that’s not all. As well as enjoying your time on land, there are also many water activities that tourists can get involved in on the lakes and coastline. Whether it’s hiring a boat for the day, taking a cruise, going paddle boarding, or even taking a swim, why not experience something new on your holidays?
There is also tonnes of history in the Lake District. From historic houses and grounds to structures, and stone-age remains, many of the sites are free to visit. And with so many cafes and local pubs to choose from, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to grabbing a bite to eat afterward.
Lastly, one of the most magical things about the Lake District is that because it is one of the darkest places in the UK at night, you can stargaze! So why not head to somewhere secluded after dark one evening? Grab a picnic blanket and just lay for a while, taking in the starry skies above.
Bognor Regis
Located in West Sussex, on the south coast of England, the seaside town of Bognor Regis is a popular destination for many UK families.
With so many activities to choose from, including amusement and arcade centres, crazy golf, and green recreational parks – not forgetting the many beaches – families are spoiled for choice when it comes to entertaining their little ones. Why not head to Bognor’s largest park (Hotham Park), and spend a day in the sun with a picnic? For any older children (or adults) Bognor has a multitude of water activities that you can get involved in. Scuba diving, sailing, and parascending are just a few examples of some of the most popular sea activities.
Bognor Regis also has a really good restaurant and late-night entertainment scene. So, if you’re looking for somewhere to sit back and relax over a few drinks, then Bognor may be the place for you.
Great Yarmouth
If you fancy a seaside break then Great Yarmouth might be a location to consider? Located in Norfolk, England, the destination has boomed for staycation holidays.
Yarmouth boasts a 15-mile-long sandy beach, a promenade (with lots of attractions on it), a Pleasure Beach (which is free to enter and has around 30 rides), the Sea Life Centre, the Hippodrome Circus, and an array of pubs, theatres, and fish-and-chip shops. What’s not to love? There are also plenty of green spaces which are perfect for pitching up and spending the day outside.
Why not take a trip to Great Yarmouth’s Hirtsy fun park? The park is a family attraction and a real working farm. Depending on the season, the farm has different activities for the family to get involved with. For example, in the summer months, the farm turns into a ‘mega maze’ which requires families to solve a quiz to escape!
With so much to choose from, a holiday in Great Yarmouth will not leave you (or your family) disappointed.
Now, while staycations or UK holidays are a good option for those who want to get away without the hassle of travelling abroad, it is still important that trips are protected with suitable travel insurance.
‘UK-specific’ or ‘staycation’ travel insurance policies are available to protect well-deserved trips from any unfortunate mishaps. What’s more, many UK or staycation policies also come with protection against disruption caused by Covid-19. For example, cancellation cover if you or anyone else on the policy catches Covid-19 before the trip and can no longer go. Some policies even offer a benefit if you catch Covid-19 while on holiday and as a result have to isolate in your accommodation.
Staycation policies can also include protection against accidental damage to rental properties, and some offer breakdown cover if the vehicle being travelled in conks out enroute to your holiday destination. Of course, cover will vary between providers, so you must read the policy wordings to make sure you understand and are happy with the protection offered.
