Last week we revealed that those placed under tier 3 measures in England would still be able to travel abroad, regardless of tougher restrictions.
The news followed a BBC Radio 4 interview with Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, where he stated that those in the tier 3 areas would still be able to travel internationally, as long as they went straight to the airport.
However, on Saturday afternoon (November 28), the UK government updated their website to say that those in tier 3 should avoid international travel. It read: “From 2 December you may travel abroad, including to visit friends and family, subject to any restrictions in place at your destination. However, those in Tier 3 should avoid leaving their tier, including for international travel, other than for work, education or caring responsibilities. Before travelling you should check relevant travel advice”.
The guidance was then updated again two days later (November 30) advising: “In a Tier 3, you should avoid travelling outside of your area. If you do need to travel abroad see the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Travel Advice for your destination and the travel corridors list.”
Undoubtedly this has caused a lot of confusion for holidaymakers, tour operators, and travel insurance providers, and calls have been made for the government to provide clarity on whether those under tier 3 restrictions will be allowed to travel abroad or not.
Until the government confirms exactly what their stance is for those in tier 3 areas, travel companies can’t advise customers on whether they can travel and also, whether they are covered by their insurer should anything go wrong.
